After approximately 16 weeks of closure, Massachusetts casinos have begun the process of reopening.
The progress is warmly welcomed by both gamers and casinos, especially the latter that suffered significant economic losses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Plainridge wins race to reopen first
In Plainville, Massachusetts, Plainridge Park Casino became the pioneering casino to resume operations, warmly embracing guests on Wednesday morning while adhering to restricted capacity measures.
The reopening update emphasized several safety measures.
- Hand sanitizing stations
- Social distancing floor stickers
- Plexiglass dividers
- Limited operational slot machines
“In the update, Lance George, vice president and general manager of Plainridge, emphasized that although the current circumstances have resulted in some limitations to the amenities cherished by our customers, our foremost concern is ensuring the safe return of our team members and guests.”
Additionally, George mentioned that the casino is working together with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, government officials, and public health professionals to conclude meticulous reopening protocols and implement enhanced health and safety measures.
Additional safety measures were also mentioned by him, such as the suspension of banquet services, closures of the second-floor and restaurant areas, and several others.
The property will be closed from 2 to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday for deep cleaning.
On Monday, the state granted permission for casinos to open, aligning with the third phase of Massachusetts’ reopening plan led by Governor Charlie Baker.
After their closure on March 14, Massachusetts casinos are now required to fulfill the minimum criteria established by the MGC prior to their reopening.
Encore, MGM to welcome guests early next week
The reopening of Encore Boston Harbor is scheduled for July 12.
The casino assures that they have made every possible effort to maintain Encore’s luxurious experience and ensure guests feel at ease, allowing them to have an enjoyable and stress-free return.
Safety measures will include:
- Temperature scans
- Mandatory masks
- Hand sanitizer stations
- Social distancing
The opening of MGM Springfield has been rescheduled to July 13, with a one-day delay.
Chris Kelley, president of the northeast group at MGM Resorts, emphasized that the health and safety of our guests and employees take precedence as we resume operations.
“While the property may have undergone some changes, the exceptional experience at MGM Springfield will remain unchanged. We eagerly anticipate the return of our valued guests.”
Similar to other casinos in the state, MGM has implemented protocols such as providing free masks and controversial plexiglass barriers. Additionally, poker, roulette, and craps will not be available during the initial phase of the casino’s reopening.
Furthermore, MGM’s reopening plan involves keeping the hotel and spa closed indefinitely. Additionally, the casinos will be reducing dining options and suspending valet services.
After the MGC grants approval to the casino’s reopening plans, it is anticipated that they will resume operations with approximately 25% of their total capacity.
Last week, Encore Boston Harbor made the announcement that it would be placing 3,000 employees on furlough. Similarly, MGM Springfield has disclosed its plan to lay off almost 2,000 employees in August.
Springfield’s acting Chief Executive, Bill Hornbuckle, described this as MGM’s toughest period to date. With approximately 63,000 workers furloughed across the country, the exact number of rehires remains uncertain.
