The anticipated opening of MGM Springfield is scheduled for September 2018. Although currently appearing as a mere structure of steel, the property’s character and essence are gradually emerging.
While the colossal casino complex in Massachusetts is set to transform the appearance of downtown Springfield, it will also seamlessly incorporate numerous aspects of the city’s current architecture.
One of the fascinating design elements involves the reuse of existing historical buildings within the casino’s three-block area. This incorporates the conversion of 54 residential units from the existing historical buildings present on the site.
However, MGM has more in store.
MGM is not only incorporating existing buildings but also infusing the historical Springfield design motif into new areas of the property.
MGM unveiled at a public meeting with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission that the poker room’s custom carpeting will pay tribute to Springfield’s automotive heritage by incorporating discreet tire tread designs.
MGM also showcased the appearance of the property’s public areas and accommodations during the meeting.
A boutique hotel in a billion-dollar casino
Rather than featuring the usual standardized rooms commonly found in contemporary casinos, the establishment will showcase 250 boutique hotel rooms. The resort aims to offer guests a distinctive experience that honors the city’s rich heritage.
MGM’s press release highlights that the unique rooms will pay homage to the nearby historical architecture that has developed over almost three centuries.
The rooms boast a wide range of design elements, including 45 different types of windows and intricate details like wired glass. Each room has its own unique features, ensuring that no two are identical.
In addition, local celebrities such as Dr. Seuss, Milton Bradley, and Emily Dickinson will also be acknowledged.
According to the press release, the design narrative emphasizes the literary and industrial roots of the city, seamlessly blending the past with the present through meticulous design elements and imaginative references. Each room will be unique, reflecting the abundance of captivating history to be explored.
Mike Mathis, president of MGM Springfield, expressed that the remarkable intricacies within these rooms mirror the compelling curiosity and amazement that embody Springfield’s rich history. Drawing from the city’s vibrant legacy, there was an abundance of material to incorporate, and Mathis hopes that the guestroom experience will encapsulate this essence, motivating guests to venture out and explore both the resort and the city as a whole.
